Description

Rose O’Neill was a remarkable turn-of-the-century illustrator and artist, as well as a great philanthropist, poet and novelist.

In 1909 Rose O’Neill had a dream about plump little creatures she called Kewpies. Kewpies first appeared as illustrations in December issue of Woman’s Home Companion and was an immediate success. Shortly thereafter, Rose began receiving letters from children asking for a Kewpie they could hold. After numerous prototypes the Kewpie doll was born in 1913 and to this day remains enduringly popular.

Strawberry Kewpie-licious is a berry sweet treat. She and her little Kewpie helpers are ready to whip up a batch of America’s most favourite dessert. This illustration was used in a 1915 recipe book. The original painting by Rose O’Neill is housed at Bonniebrook Historical Society Museum. Rose O’Neill’s home near Branson, Missouri. Her costume is designed by New York City designer, Margiann Flannagan.
